The Movie
"The Consequences of Love" (Le conseguenze dell'amore) is a 2004 Italian psychological thriller directed by Paolo Sorrentino.
I’ve watched this movie multiple times and have a different interpretation of the story each time. My latest is that the whole movie is a day dream of the man up the electricity pole at the end. What do you think?
Pay close attention to the scene where Titta sits alone in his hotel room, meticulously arranging his belongings on the bed. The subtle facial expressions. The slow movements. This is a man very much alone.
Titta walks through the hotel corridors and everything isolates him. He is oppressed by his surroundings.
The movie slowly unveils Titta's backstory through a series of flashbacks and conversations. Titta reveals his past involvement with the mafia to Sofia, the hotel waitress. Feel his guilt. And his confusion of how he ended up working for the mafia.
In one of the film's most powerful scenes, Titta injects himself with heroin in his hotel room. The score as he does this is mesmerising. Indeed, the music throughout adds another layer to his isolation.
Hope you enjoy this movie. It’s in my top 5!
